Pink Rink
What they are, how they started and what they aim to do.
In the summer of 2007 two female floorball fanatics in Aberdeen got their heads together to come up with a plan of integrating more ladies into the sport of floorball. An event was created with the aim of getting together all of the female floorball players in Scotland (league or non-league players, adults and kids, beginners and advanced) for some fun games, whilst bringing new ladies along to try out the sport in a more relaxed atmosphere.
The event created was named the "Pink Rink" and the first of its kind took place in September 2007 in Dundee, attracting over 20 players. Since then the Pink Rinks have continued on an almost three monthly cycle and have been well supported and successful at encouraging ladies of all ages (9 to 50) to participate in such floorball events, some completely new to the sport, others who train with local teams but do not (for various reasons) participate in the league and then those who play whenever and wherever possible.
The idea to play "swiss style" (3 vs 3 plus keeper on a 20 × 10m rink) aimed to enhance the participation of everyone on the rink and due to the general lack of "positions" minimize the need for previous experience, thus bringing together all ages and abilities. Originally the day cumulated in a 5’s game, where teams were merged, which helped everyone to get to know each other.
Although initially created to increase the numbers of ladies playing floorball in Scotland, the "Pink Rink" began to show some signs that a "swiss-style" ladies league may not be too far in the future. Based on this, the aim is now to create a ladies mini-league in Scotland for the season 08/09…. Watch this space!
